Instagram May Launch Separate App for Reels.
Instagram is reportedly considering launching a separate app for its short-form video feature, Reels, in light of TikTok’s uncertain future in the United States.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri told staff this week about the move, reported technology industry–focused business publication The Information, citing a person who heard the remarks.
In January, Donald Trump signed an executive order seeking to delay by 75 days the enforcement of the TikTok ban. Last year, former US President Joe Biden signed legislation requiring TikTok’s parent, ByteDance, to sell to a US owner or shut down.
While signing the order, Trump suggested that the US government should be a half owner of TikTok’s U.S. business in return for keeping the app alive, reported Associated Press.
In January, Instagram announced a video editing app called Edits soon after ByteDance’s video editing app, CapCut, was removed from Apple’s App Store and Google Play Store as part of the TikTok ban.
In 2018, Meta launched a standalone video-sharing app called Lasso to compete with TikTok, but the app was later shut down.
