Instagram Expands Teen Safety Features in India

Under the new system, all users under 18 will automatically be placed in a default 13+ content setting

Instagram has announced new updates to improve safety for teenagers in India. The platform is expanding its Teen Accounts with stricter content controls, inspired by movie ratings for ages 13 and above.
Under the new system, all users under 18 will automatically be placed in a default 13+ content setting. This means teens will mostly see content similar to what is allowed in age-appropriate movies. They won’t be able to change these settings without parental permission.
Instagram said it has updated its policies to reduce exposure to inappropriate content. This includes limiting posts with strong language, risky stunts, and content that may encourage unsafe behavior.
The platform will also block certain search terms and restrict teens from seeing “content that goes against updated guidelines in recommendations (Explore, Reels, and in-Feed), Feed, and Stories – even when shared by someone they follow – or comments.”
In addition, Instagram is introducing a new “Limited Content” option “which will filter even more content from the Teen Account experience. It will also remove teens’ ability to see, leave, or receive comments under posts.”
