It's complicated: Don't be weird, share more

The quieter you are on social media with nothing else to show except a few birthday wishes from the previous year the weirder you are.

For Katrina Kaif, a crucial lesson came with her break-up. In the days she went dark following the split with Ranbir Kapoor — the man everyone had assumed she’s giving up her career for — the actress kept away from most forms of social and formal communication. Apparently, this was final advice from the ex — just go quiet. The plan backfired though and soon, Katrina found herself without any friends or coverage. For the press and fans there were other stars to follow. But she has since made amends and is now gradually opening up on Facebook. In fact, there’s a brand new profile out there.

It’s a funny world we live in today. The quieter you are on social media — with nothing else to show except a few birthday wishes from the previous year — the weirder you are. People, somehow, automatically assume you’re not allowed near schools. If you’re not posting an image of that cup of frothy coffee with your name carved out on top, you’re a loner! Look how open Kangana Ranaut is with her life. Kareena Kapoor is now married to Saif, but she still wants to talk about how shocked her parents were a decade ago when she decided to move in with him. It’s nice to reveal things which honestly are no longer relevant, apparently.

Because, according to the New World, there must be something seriously wrong with you if you have nothing to share every five minutes; either on Facebook (to show which over-priced restaurant you have checked into), on Twitter (perfect to rant about the day’s proceedings at the Lower House), Instagram (to show-off photography skills) or Snapchat (the current market leader asking you to show off every second of your life).

Snapchat is the new Picasso. We are all so obsessed with snap-chatting every minute detail of our lives that we have become allergic to words such as mystery and privacy. People worry about the extinction of the handwritten word but talking itself might soon become redundant since we now manage to communicate everything these days through videos and images.

Secrets, skeletons and a low profile add weight to our personality but who wants the extra pounds? Might as well post every mundane detail. Do you really think the Kardashians have a secret they want to keep? Malaika Arora Khan shares all the goodies her alleged boyfriend bought her on Instagram without worrying about what her husband or his family would say. Another actress is a huge fan of sexting and really doesn’t care about her images being circulated through the dark alleys of the Web.

In fact, the mighty Kardashians have made their fortune by making a public display of their lives. You know, because there’s always someone, somewhere looking at your photographs and deciding that you will be perfect brand ambassador for a product of lifestyle they’re now selling. The only downside to this trend is apart from yourself (unless you are Katrina Kaif) others might not find you that interesting and nothing is more devastating than zero likes. So instead of just uploading pictures, make sure you are doing genuinely interesting stuff as well. Go ahead, share more.
