Asus Zenfone Max: A smartphone with a huge battery

In the crowded arena of mid-range smartphones, a power monster makes an entry.

It's a vicious cycle. You have more apps on your phone since it now comes with superior display, a better processor, and a bigger screen. It also comes with the option of adding additional space. Lovely! Time to download a few more apps; who cares if you are ever going to use them more than a couple of times. The end result? Your phone runs out of juice in less than half a day. Of course, you could now buy a power bank and lug it around, but it is not the most stylish thing to do. Asus has understood this and has launched the Zenfone Max, a beefed up version of its own phone with a 5000mAh battery that is said to last up to 3 days on a single charge.

Featuring a 5.5 inches display and a screen resolution of 1280x720p, the Max sports battery- technology, like a Power Saving mode that adjusts processor core performance depending on the kind of apps you use, auto adjustment of screen brightness depending on ambient light and even performance of background apps, all to optimize power.

Design-wise, the Max is typical of an Asus phone, which has its cult following. Unlike the slightly older models, this one does not have the control keys at the back panel, which makes it easier for users of other brands to migrate with ease. The curved back fits well into your palm and the slightly rough contours of the plastic casing makes it sturdy to hold. Ideal for Indian conditions, we think.

Upgraded with 1.5GHz octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor, the Max comes pre-installed with ZenUI, which has received mixed reviews from users. On one hand, it is aimed at enhancing the Android experience, but it tends to go overboard with the personalization. A 13MP back and 5MP front camera are regular fixtures these days. But one refreshing change is that the Max is one of the earliest devices that comes with the Android Marshmallow. Priced at Rs 9,999 for the 2GB RAM and Rs 12,999 for the 3GB version, we believe this is reasonable, given its powerhouse potential
