Android may beat Apple in overall app sales this year

The projected sales of all Android apps may overtake Apple for the first time ever.

As our world gets increasingly digital, the app economy continues to flourish. Over years, the app world has experienced major gains. Now, a specialised market research group App Annie predicts that the markets expects to see the quickest growth, as well as the evolution and maturation of download and revenue metrics across key emerging and developed markets.

The iOS App Store is projected to remain the leading app store for the next five years, as it is slated to generate over $60 billion in gross consumer spend in 2021. However, when factoring in Google Play and third-party Android stores combined, consumer spend should overtake iOS for the first time ever in 2017, the report stated.

Android, with its dominant smart device market share and strong installed-base growth is expected to rake in $21 billion. The amount combines Google Play along with other popular Android stores such as Samsung and Amazon.

What is interesting to note is that while Apple’s app store is predicted to double the earnings, the amount of apps actually downloaded is only around quarter of Google’s. On the basis of this, it is safe to assume that Android users are essentially more likely to download free apps and are less likely to splurge on in-app purchases.
