Public transport that will shuttle passengers at a top speed of 760mph

American aerospace manufacturer SpaceX is set to host a pod design competition for university students. VicHyper with their proposed pod project Hyperloop was among the 30 teams whose design was selected to be built and tested in January next year.

According to the information provided on their official website, Hyperloop is a mass transit system that will shuttle passengers and cargos at speeds of up to 760mph (1,223km/h). This speed is made possible with the help of either magnetic levitation (maglev) or air bearings that create a cushion of air.

“With our design, we are mainly focusing on the braking and acceleration side,” Project Leader of VicHyper Zac McClelland told New Atlas. “So we are putting in technology that can be used on wheels, or maglev or air bearing vehicles.”

SpaceX will be running the Hyperloop Pod competition between January 27 and January 29, 2017. A second instalment will take place in the following summer.
