VLC becomes the first video player app to play 360-degree videos

The company plans on launching an all-new VLC 3.0 by the end of this month.

The VLC media player by VideoLAN is among the most commonly used video players at the moment. The company plans on releasing a new update – VLC 3.0 by the end of this month with all new features. Among the numerous features is the 360-degree video support that the company plans on releasing.

“With the help of Giroptic, VLC becomes the first major video player app to play 360-degree videos out-of-the-box. VLC 3.0 final release will merge those features on all platforms,” the company’s website read.

While the company has already launched a technical preview that allows users to experience 360-degree videos on Windows and Mac, the new version will be available for Android, iOS and Xbox One users soon.

Other features that are slated to be released with the new update include playback of 360 videos, playback of 360 photos and panoramas and display modes with zoom among others.

“VLC is one of the video players most widely used in the world. We are very proud to contribute our expertise in 360 degree to this open source player. This will allow the millions of VLC users to take full advantage of a promising new technology and be widely involved in its democratisation,” said Richard Ollier, Co-Founder and CEO of Giroptic.
