To cater to the needs of users residing in developing nations with erratic internet connectivity and entry-level devices with low storage, Instagram announced the Lite version of its app.
Instagram Lite for Android is now available in select countries and it began testing in Mexico this week, TechCrunch reported.
As the name suggests, the app is a toned down version of the original Instagram and weighs 1/55th the size of the main app — it weighs 573Kb.
Users will be able to do the essential Instagram stuff such as post photos, stories, and browse other Instagram posts. However, it doesn't allow you to share videos or Direct Message friends. The Lite version gets rid of the unwanted bloat that the usual app contains.
The Lite version is in line with Facebook’s suite of ‘Lite’ apps that aim to reduce data usage and lower space on device memory. The Lute apps are meant to be used in developing countries where communication infrastructure is at a nascent stage, translating to slower than usual Internet speeds.
Instagram Lite will be particularly beneficial for the new range of low-end Android Go smartphones that aim to offer the best of smartphone experience without burning a hole in the pocket of the common man. The app is presently under test in Mexico and should be expected to roll out in India later in the year.
