Back in the game: Welcome Nokia 2.0

The new trio do live up to Nokia's classic reputation of churning out durable, strong phones, but this time with a lot of design swag.

Nokia is back in India, the brand that was – in its time – akin to Colgate for toothpaste. The re-entry of Nokia has an interesting angle: All the new devices will be made in India. Last week, Nokia launched three models – the Nokia 3, 5 and 6 – the early birds in the Nokia 2.0 journey in India.

A couple of other things that are new this time around: one, the devices will run on the purest form of Android ever. Two, there is increased emphasis on design, even intricate details such as every phone being made from its own block of metal and design inspirations from stalwarts of world-leading design schools.

The pure Android is a refreshing change for those of us who feel violated when smart phone brands decide to have their own bells and whistles on top of Android. Design-wise, the devices are sturdy, have a good solid metallic feel to them, but are not insanely heavy. The new trio do live up to Nokia’s classic reputation of churning out durable, strong phones, but this time with a lot of design swag.

There are subtle differences between the three models. While the Nokia 3 comes with a polarized 5-inch screen, and an 8MP front and rear cameras, the Nokia 5 comes with a 5.2-inch HD display and is superior in design compared to the 3. The Nokia 6, however is the bada bhai, featuring Dolby Atmos, a 5.5-inches HD screen and a frame made from a single block of aluminium. The Nokia 6 is an Amazon exclusive and comes with freebies like free download of Kindle books, offers on Amazon Pay among others.

The Nokia 3 is currently available at Rs 9,499. The Nokia 5 will come soon at Rs 12,899 and Nokia 6 will be available from July for Rs 14,999.
