Facebook hires ex-google employee to bolster Internet projects

Facebook has brought Kevin Lo to handle company's recent projects like fibre-optic cable deal with Microsoft and Terragraph.

The social networking giant, Facebook has hired a co-founder of Google’s Fibre high-speed Internet project, aiming to strengthen Facebook’s internet connectivity team—to bring internet access to more places around the globe.

The former general manager for Google Fibre, Kevin Lo, will now serve as the new Director of Infrastructure Connectivity and Investments. According to Recode, the Facebook has brought Kevin Lo to handle company’s recent projects like fibre-optic cable deal with Microsoft and Terragraph—to bring better connectivity to densely populated urban areas.

Facebook has confirmed that neither the company will be putting any money into becoming an internet service provider—like Google Fibre nor that Lo will work on Free Basics.

Lo confirmed his appointment on a Facebook page, highlighting the fact that still there are more than 4 billion people who doesn’t have access to high-speed internet, he said, ‘The Internet can provide new opportunities for engagement, education and economic growth. However, it's become increasingly clear that we're leaving a lot of folks behind.’

‘I'm excited to let you know I'm joining Facebook this month as Director of Infrastructure Connectivity and Investments. I’ll help shape our strategy and investments with partners to build wireless technologies and ecosystems that improve global connectivity,’ he added.
