Google recently confirmed that one of its self driving cars was involved in an accident on Friday afternoon on the city streets of Mountain View, California.

‘According to a statement from Google, the self-driving car was northbound on Phyllis Ave., when another vehicle traveling west on El Camino Real, ran a red light and hit the passenger side of Google’s autonomous car,’ reported CBS Local.

While, the vehicle was seriously damaged; there were injuries sustained on either the Google observer or the van driver. Full details on the collision are yet to be shared by Google. However, they did confirm that the vehicle was in control during the time of the accident.

‘A Google vehicle was traveling northbound on Phyllis Ave. in Mountain View when a car heading westbound on El Camino Real ran a red light and collided with the right side of our vehicle. Our light was green for at least six seconds before our car entered the intersection. Thousands of crashes happen everyday on U.S. roads, and red-light running is the leading cause of urban crashes in the U.S. Human error plays a role in 94% of these crashes, which is why we’re developing fully self-driving technology to make our roads safer,’ Google said in a statement.
