Lithium-oxygen battery could save our future devices

There's a new solution being developed to cut down the charging sessions of smartphones and electric vehicles.

Electrical energy is no doubt the only solution to save the environment from getting devastated but it comes with its own flaws. And, one of the most prominent one is the need of consistent charging. However, this problem may be tackled in the future by the use of lithium-oxygen batteries replacing the currently used lithium-ion ones.

A recent paper released in the Science portal reveals about a new solution being developed to cut down the charging sessions of smartphones and electric cars (which are the future of mobility). The researches developed a way to convert the strength of lithium-oxygen combination into a usable assembly for powering our devices.

However, the concept has some shortcomings which the boffins need to tackle. When the lithium-oxygen battery discharges, it produces such elements which result in corrosion of the battery parts, limiting its validity over time. But the experts managed to overcome this by replacing carbon cathode of the battery with a nickel oxide unit along with stainless steel mesh. This was added by increasing the temperature to 150 degree Celsius and using molten salt for electrolyte.

No matter how much potential this technique possesses, experts believe it is still far away from being commercial owing to the extremely slow development in the field. The products don’t have as much longevity as the ones these days have.
