Google won't scan emails for Gmail ads

Lawsuits had been filed earlier over ads based on scanned email messages and faced criticism.

Google is planning to planning to abandon its longstanding and controversial practice of scanning Gmail emails to serve targeted advertising.

According to Bloomberg, ads will continue to appear inside the free version of Gmail, as promoted messages. But instead of scanning a user’s email, the ads will now be targeted with other personal information Google already pulls from sources such as search and YouTube. Lawsuits had been filed earlier over ads based on scanned email messages and faced criticism. Google will continue to scan Gmail to screen for potential spam or phishing attacks.
