The Supreme Court today demanded that the Central government chart out guidelines regulating speech and behaviour on social media platforms, after fearing for hate speech and national security. The latter has further been given three weeks to report back to the court on progress made about the same.
During a hearing for petitions filed in favour of linking Aadhaar with social media accounts, Justices Deepak Gupta and Aniruddha Bose expressed serious concern over some social media platforms not being able to trace the originator of a message or an online content.
The bench said neither the apex court nor the high court is competent to decide this scientific issue and it is for the government to come up with appropriate guideline to deal with these issues.
According to Times Now, one of the judges said, “We can't get away by saying that we don't have a technology to track originators of online crime, if there is a technology to do it there is a technology to stop it.”...
