iPhone 8 to have wireless charging, dual optical image stabilisation
Apple has been working towards the release of the new “iPhone 8” in September 2017 with major redesigns and ramping up various hardware specs. Some of the features include an edge-to-edge OLED display with a front camera and a non-physical home button like the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. But this time the home button with the TouchID fingerprint sensor will be integrated into the screen.
The iPhone 8 is also reportedly touted to have a glass body as compared to the aluminium housing that has been the major structure value for iPhone generations after the iPhone 4s. Recently a couple of leaks have surfaced which means Apple is going to make the iPhone 8 standout from its competition.
Dual Optical Image Stabilisation
According to a report by MacRumors, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has stated that the new dual camera models in 2017 will support dual optical image stabilisation. Kuo maintains his belief that Apple will redesign the telephoto lens to support the feature in addition to existing auto focus functionality.
“We believe Apple will add OIS function to the telephoto CCM in order to enhance the selling points of next year’s new iPhone. We think photo quality and optical zoom range may both improve as a result. We expect the telephoto lens will be redesigned to support OIS in the telephoto CCM, with challenges likely coming from: (1) the need to increase the image circle of the telephoto lens, which will lead to longer calibration time and a more complex assembly processes; and (2) a redesign of the telephoto lens, as an increased image circle will result in degraded photo quality around the corners.”
Also, Kuo expects Apple supplier Largan Precision to remain the exclusive provider of 6P and telephoto lens for trio of new iPhones.
The newly released iPhone 7 Plus has dual camera systems. One camera system uses the same 12MP wide-angle camera on the iPhone 7. Also, there is a 12MP telephoto camera system which enables better quality zoom from farther away.
Wireless Charging
This is not the usual wireless charging system. This does not involve a platform for the device to put on. This is wireless charging from a distance. Last month, Nikkei reported that Hon Hai Precision Industry, also known as Foxconn Technology Group, is actively been manufacturing wireless charging modules to go with the iPhone’s 10th anniversary which is slated to release in 2017, according to sources.
“But whether the feature can eventually make it into Apple’s updated devices will depend on whether Foxconn can boost the yield rate to a satisfactory level later on,” the source said.
Yield rate measures the number of satisfactory units in the batch of components. If the yield rate of a component is low, then its production could be deemed to be too unprofitable. In that scenario, there is a risk that the component will be left out of the final product.
The iPhone 8 will be chargeable from a distance of up to 15 feet from a plugged-in transmitter. Essentially the iPhone 8 will have a receiver built into the device so as to support wireless charging feature. The major benefit is you will not be tied down to the outlet with wired capabilities or the current wireless charging facilities available in the market today.
According to VentureBeat, it had spotted Energous WattUp technology’s regulatory filings citing Apple compliance testing thus building on rumors that Apple is experimenting with wireless charging. Energous is known for its wire-free charging “millimetres to distances up to 15 feet.” But there is a chance that the iPhone 8 will not have wireless charging if the technology is not ready on time.
