Future phones will withstand drops better
Corning has announced its new Gorilla Glass 5, a new generation of hardened glass made to whitstand drops. The new generation of the glass will be able to survive drops from higher heights compared to earlier versions.
The new glass can handle from up to 5.25 feet on to rough surfaces. The company claims, that the new Gorilla Glass is 4 times tougher than the competing glass when dropped face-down from shoulder height onto rough surfaces. Corning has started manufacturing the Glass and aims to sell it for commercial purposes by the end of this year.
The company is yet to confirm the manufacturer who will be using the new Gorilla Glass on their devices. Samsung, Lenovo, Motorola, Asus and LG are all among those who use Gorilla Glass in their displays.
The performance of the glass will also depend on the size of the smartphone and the thickness of the glass used for the display.
The company executives also teased some information about the upcoming Project Phire, Corning claims that the new material will unite properties of Gorilla Glass and sapphire.
Corning's VP and general manager, John Bayne believes the material makes more sense on smaller wearable devices, though they would eventually aim to introduce it to smartphones.
