Internet service providers block sites playing NZ terror attack videos

Following the deadly terror attacks on the mosques in New Zealand, internet service providers are also taking measures to stop the spread of the violent videos online.

The companies are teaming up to ban websites which refuse to take down videos of the horrific incident that was first live streamed by the gunman and later shared across social media platforms.

According to Mashable, mobile service providers including Vodafone is also working with other large internet service providers in New Zealand, including Spark, 2Degrees, and Vocus to identify and block access to sites which are found distributing the video.

If the video is identified, the site is temporarily blocked and then notified with a request to remove the content. If the site complies, it is unblocked.

The concern around the distribution of the attack video is over fears of the footage being used to incite or support further hate.

Meanwhile, Facebook revealed that it removed 1.5 million videos in the 24 hours following the attack in Christchurch, of which 1.2 million vidoes were removed right at the uploading stage.
