Lego Avengers to the rescue

The new game in the Marvel series has its shortcomings, but it's still a fun Lego game.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is arguably the best game in the series; thanks to that so much was expected from the next LEGO game in the Marvel universe.

Unfortunately, developer Traveller’s Tales decided to base it on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly the two Avengers movies which led to way too many unexpected problems.

The game opens with the beginning of Avengers: Age of Ultron and then tells the story of the first one to completion, before moving back the second movie.

Sequences from other films are represented in game’s side missions. The cutscenes are filled with the usual LEGO charm with a majority of the dialogue taken straight from the films, but as a result they sound muffled and awkward almost all the time, something younger audiences might have an issue with. As someone who was not fond of the voice acting in the previous one, taking dialogue straight from the original isn’t ideal either.

Another shortcoming is the roster itself, especially after considering the sheer number of well-known Marvel characters available in Marvel Super Heroes. As expected there are no X-Men , Fantastic Four or even Spider-Man; the game is filled with B and C tier characters, something that’s sure to be a disappointment for the games targeted younger audience.

At its core, its still a good game in the series. Players can roam around in Manhattan as various superheroes and the hunt for Gold Bricks is as captivating as before. The game uses the movie sequences in some clever ways and I had a lot of fun fighting all the bosses throughout the dozen hours I spent playing the game.

LEGO Marvel’s Avengers is deeply restricted by its source material. Still, Traveller’s Tales have created another LEGO game that is fun, charming and engaging. The formula of destroying and building LEGO objects seems to work every single time, even if it fumbles a few times on the way.
