Ubisoft goes on an adventure

With the game, you can snowboard, ski and glide in a wingsuit.

Remember shredding fresh snowcapped peaks back in the days of the fabled PlayStation 2? Well now you don’t need a shot of nostalgia if you want to relive those glory days thanks to Ubisoft’s brand new game Steep.

The game was in beta recently and I was lucky enough to get access to it and here’s what I thought of the game for the 8 or so hours that I spent on it. Frankly, Ubisoft has delivered a visual masterpiece. Though not being the adventure sports-type, I was immediately enthralled by the sheer dynamic nature of the game. Trust me, Steep puts you in the driver’s seat, especially with the first person “Adventure camera”. Jumping off a cliff face to engage my wingsuit or leaping down a snow-laden slope on my snowboard or skis has never felt more exhilarating!

The game offers a wide range of activities to participate in including time trials, skill runs and stunt slopes, free dives and depending on how well you perform on each task, newer challenges are unlocked. You can even choose to free roam, discover impossible routes down the icy slopes and set challenges for other players, creating a very lively atmosphere in the game world.

In terms of gameplay, the game feels very responsive for the most part.
Here’s some honest advice: Do not attempt to play Steep using a keyboard and mouse, just use a controller. Also, not all the activities are equally flushed out; the para-sailing challenges proved to be the most boring ones and the activity in general was by far the weakest.

However, during my time spent with the Beta one thing was made amply clear to me — Ubisoft has managed to make one hell of an adventure sports game that ought to reinvigorate the genre. I am definitely going to get my hands on the final game when it launches.
