LG to supply iPhone 8's 3D face recognition system

LG's new facility investment which is worth $238.5 million roughly will be dedicated to Apple's orders.

According to a report by The Korian Economic Daily, LG Innotek will be supplying Apple with 3D facial recognition modules for its upcoming iPhone 8.

The report says that LG’s new facility investment which is worth $238.5 million roughly will be dedicated to Apple’s orders and will also build a new plant for the production of these modules.

The facial recognition module will be a part of iPhone 8’s front facing FaceTime camera. It’s still unclear whether the front facing snapper will also have a dual camera setup or will stick to the single lens similar to previous iPhones.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities previously said the iPhone 8 will have a "revolutionary" front-facing camera system with 3D sensing capabilities, fuelled by algorithms from PrimeSense, an Israeli company that Apple acquired in 2013. PrimeSense was known for developing Microsoft's first Kinect sensor for Xbox.

Kuo also said that the front camera system will also include two infrared modules that are able to determine the depth and location of the objects placed in front of it. It will useful for apps that involve facial recognition, iris scanning, and some combination of augmented reality/virtual reality/mixed reality.
