Chennai: Young talent shines in science, robotic tech

Divided into teams, these children did not lose patience in explaining the concepts to the visitors, who visited them throughout the day.

Chennai:Ice cream sticks, dismantled wires, thrown away flex boxes and unbroken spirits. Students from various government and corporation schools, who participated in a cultural event by Bhumi, one of the India’s largest volunteer run organizations, used all such materials to make an array of scientific experiments at CSI Bishop Corrie Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School on Sunday.

Ignite Fest, by Bhumi , saw the participation of 584 students, who displayed their talent in dance, music and debates, besides trying their hands at science and robotic technology. Ignite fest is a platform to showcase the impact, Bhumi has created on the children

Divided into teams, these children did not lose patience in explaining the concepts to the visitors, who visited them throughout the day.

A ‘Fire Fighting Robot’ by Vartha Padhatha Robotic Sangam, Password protected automatic home by Fire girls, an automatic door by Ninja Lions, dancing robot by Super Strikers and GI Joe, an upgraded JCB by Rock guys, Smart home by VIP Boys were a few projects that showed the students’ creative levels in the projects.

Not only the projects but the team names were well thought out. Most of the projects had a connection with current issues in the society. ‘Avengers’ made driverless car parking device and ‘Beast boys’ created a bank safety device that apparently helped prevent thefts.

Explaining the methodology of the fire-fighting robot, Vigneshwaran A. from Vartha Padhatha Robotic Sangam said, “We have used Infra Red Sensor for fire sensing. Connected to a servomotor, a pipe would turn and pump out water through Direct Current Motor, thus dousing the fire.”

An upgraded JCB by Rock Guys had an automatic direction display system along with an LCD screen that shows the routes of the vehicle. The concepts of sublimation and evaporation were practically put to use in the science show to create magic.

Volunteers played a massive role in guiding children to create scientific experiments. “From organising the show to motivating the kids for participation during the exam season required a lot of planning,” said a volunteer, Tharani Muthu.
