India-based manufacturer Hulikkal recently launched a range of eco-friendly, electric cycles at an event in Mangaluru. The cycles are powered by lithium-ion batteries and are known to be India’s first lithium-ion battery-powered e-bikes. The event was inaugurated by J R Lobo, Mangaluru city south MLA at Hamsmart on 10 December.

The e-bikes are updated with the latest design and technology and have features of both -- automatic driving and pedalling. The cycles can travel up to 30kms on a single charge and it takes about 90 minutes for it to get completely charged. The cycle runs at a cost of 20 paise per kilometre and is approved by Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Pune. The cycle’s battery has a life of 30,000kms and can last up to 5 years.

”With the introduction of electric cycle, Mangaluru city can now reduce pollution, and educational and institutional campuses, industrial and business establishments, large residential lay outs etc. can promote E-Cycle for internal transportation. This E-cycle will be ideal for older people who can’t pedal much, and also ideal for youngsters as exercise and health wise,” said MLA J R Lobo at the inauguration (as reported by news agency Manglorean).
