Reliance Jio plans to connect 90 per cent cars to Internet
As people queue up outside Reliance stores to get their hands on the new Jio Sim, new reports suggested that the company also plans to connect 90 per cent of vehicles to the Internet by 2020.
According to a Team-BHP, Reliance Jio has started developing a Jio Car Connect OBD — an on-board diagnostics service — to better assist drivers on India roads.
The on-board diagnostics technology has been an important area of focus for modern car manufacturers for providing more information to the user about their cars seamlessly.
It works on the basis of data collected from the car’s sensors, which is depicted on a small-screened mobile or other electrical device. It is used for viewing the car’s salient stats and if it is in perfect condition or not.
The Jio Car Connect will consist of a hardware device which plugs into the car’s OBD port along with a mobile app. The device is as small as a Dongle, and has a SIM slot.
After inserting the Reliance Jio SIM into the Dongle-like device, a Wi-Fi hotspot will be established. This gives users access to a slew of new RJio apps, music, cinema and much more. The user can also make free voice calls with the Jio Join App.
The app, which is still under development, will provide all vital stats about the car including oil status, water level, fuel info, and battery alert. If the new technology sees the light of the day, it will become a nifty tool for daily car users. The company has not yet made any formal announcements about the launch of this device.
