Oculus VR headset rendered unusable after update for Note 7

The app will no longer work on Galaxy Note 7 devices.

Virtual Reality headset maker Oculus VR has pushed in a new update for the Galaxy Note 7 devices which immobilizes the Gear VR app on the device. According to several sources, instead of loading the app, it shows a message stating “until further notice, Note 7 devices will not be compatible with the Gear VR.”

The move by the headset maker is a logical one, given the news of Note 7(s) exploding across the world, Samsung has went into damage control mode involving a massive recall and transportation of unopened devices all over the world. Another fact would be that the Gear VR puts the smartphone in close proximity to the face and eyes.

Samsung has been unambiguous in explaining to Galaxy Note 7 owners that they should “power down and take advantage of the remedies available, including a refund at their place of purchase.” The Oculus update was first reported by a Reddit user Bahaman23 and confirmed by Android Central.

Many users have also complained that they an no longer use not only their Galaxy Note 7(s) but their Gear VR headsets have been rendered unusable as well. The Oculus headsets are now compatible with older Samsung phones which are Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, S6, S6 Edge and Note 5, according to Samsung’s website. However, for people who have had it with Samsung, can now opt for the Google’s new Pixel phones and Google’s new Daydream VR headset.
