Android Oreo and Nougat shows growth in Google's January 2018 report

Google has yet again shared an update on its Android distribution stats. For a period of one week ending January 8, 2018, the company says that 0.7 per cent of all the Android devices that used the Play Store were running on Android Oreo.

This further breaks down to 0.5 per cent running Android 8.0 and 0.2 per cent running Android 8.1. Android Nougat 7.0 and 7.1 grew from last month as well, finishing at 26.3 per cent usage in January. Android Marshmallow (6.0) witnessed a decline, finishing at 28.6 per cent.

Android Lollipop 5.0 and 5.1 also saw a decline, finishing the month at 25.1 per cent usage. Android KitKat and Android Jelly bean fell to 12.8 per cent and 5.6 per cent respectively. While Android Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) and Android Gingerbread (2.3) held steady at 0.5 percent and 0.4 percent, respectively.

These numbers are the proof that usage of Android Oreo and Nougat continues to grow while other versions continue to slip. That’s not surprising, as there are still very few devices with Android Oreo, and most of them are Google’s own Pixel and Nexus devices.

Once flagship smartphones from giants such as Samsung, LG, and others begin to receive Oreo updates, we will certainly see Oreo grab a bigger share of Google’s platform.
