Android Marshmallow usage increasing; still behind Lollipop

The Android Marshmallow (V 6.0) is now being utilised by 10.1 per cent devices, a 2.6 per cent increase from last month's figure.

Search giant Google has again released data regarding Google Play Android distribution data, a report which showcases data regarding the usage of various Android operating system versions running on active devices.

This time around the data, collected during a 7-day period ending June 6, indicated that the Android Marshmallow (V 6.0) is now being utilised by 10.1 per cent devices, a 2.6 per cent increase from last month’s figure of 7.5 per cent.

Unfortunately, in terms of user adoption, it still ranks behind its predecessor Lollipop, which is active on 35.4 per cent Android devices. Marshmallow was only used by 1 per cent active devices in February and that too, after five months after it was released.

It’s a known fact that the Marshmallow OS took its own sweet time to appear on active smartphones – something caused due to the low number of devices that shipped with the native Marshmallow OS and the lack of OS updates from device manufacturers.

Moving on to older Android OS distribution data, the KitKat usage is decreasing slowly, now at 31.6 per cent; lower than last month’s count of 32.5 per cent. Jellybean (4.0) usage has also dropped from 20.1 to 18.9 per cent.

This clearly points out that most Android users are still clinching on to older operating systems, which can be totally attributed to the lack of new OS updates made available to customers. However, with the upcoming Android N, more Android device users can expect devices to be shipped with only Marshmallow OS.
