Fields of Elysium can rival the best of DLCs
The Fate of Atlantis is the second DLC set for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and its first episode, titled Fields of Elysium is out now. It primarily features a gorgeous new area, new enemy types, the ability to upgrade some skills even further and more. The DLC is connected to the modern-day sequences of Assassin’s Creed, and you even get to play as Layla in the quest leading up to Elysium.
Fields of Elysium is massive in size and will keep you occupied for longer than some other games. It comes as even a bigger surprise when you consider this is just the first part of the Atlantis DLC. If you want a lot of content for the money you spend, Fields of Elysium can rival some of the best DLC in the market.
The quality of that content however depends upon how much you want more of the same. I personally thought that the gameplay, mission design and level design all began to grow stale by the end of the main game and the first DLC. Hence going into Elysium but performing the same tasks gets boring. There are a few new enemy types, and thus combat fairs better than the missions. You will be constantly bombarded with AOE attacks that make it so that you cannot use adrenalin, which shakes up the battle system. Now you either need to be careful about which enemies to take out first, or risk having no adrenalin to use. Unless you are an expert at dodging, the new encounter design in Fields of Elysium makes things more challenging.
However, I was not a fan of the design of the world. Elysium is breathtaking to look at, with stunning art design that stands out in an already visually appealing game. But the world itself is not fun to explore, due to the sheer verticality and number of cliffs. There are gateways of sorts to fast travel, from the ground to access the areas above and vice versa, but they are not always present on every side.
The first episode of The Fate of Atlantis is definitely better than anything we saw in Legacy of the First Blade. But I found the story to be boring and the world, while gorgeous, was not as interesting as some the zones in the main game. Still, if you want a lot more of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, you will find plenty to like in the latest DLC.
