Facebook develops new AI maps to enhance location mapping

The new maps will significantly enhance location mapping, which will help the company in boosting internet connectivity.

Mumbai: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday announced that two of the company’s research wings have analysed 15.6 billion satellite images to create enhanced AI maps for precise location mapping.

In a Facebook post, Zuckerberg said that the social networking website’s solar-powered aircraft developing unit and AI research team have completed building advanced AI maps to “create accurate population maps across 21.6 million square kilometres of Earth”.

He pointed out that a large number of people reside in remote communities and accurate data on their whereabouts is not always feasible. According to Zuckerberg, the new maps will significantly enhance location mapping, which will help the company in “beaming down internet connectivity”.

“We can’t beam internet connectivity to people if we don’t know where communities are,” he said.

Citing numerous scopes of the new maps, Zuckerberg said,” These maps will be shared openly with the community, so other organisations can use them too. This should help with planning energy, health and transport infrastructure, as well as assisting people who need help in disasters.”

He has also shared a video demonstration of how the new AI maps compare with the current state-of-the-art population maps.
