Micro LEDs to make LCD displays perform like OLEDs

Rohinni's micro-LEDs are considerably smaller in size compared to other conventional 1mm LED chips.

Rohinni at CES 2017 demonstrated its micro-LED technology and also showcased a glimpse of the new backlight technology that it’s working on for the LCD panels. Rohinni’s micro-LEDs are considerably smaller in size compared to other conventional 1mm LED chips.

According to Phone Scoop, the new chips can be placed on thin, flexible plastic sheets. The company is in collaboration with unnamed partners to use this technology in LCD backlights, reducing panel thickness allowing slimmer phones.

The chip will also allow local dimming, that improves contrast and consumes less power, similar to high-end LED home TVs. Micro-LEDs can also be printed on flexible plastic sheets. These chips are currently used for the slimmest laptop keyboard backlights and have many other applications for smartphones.
