Researcher’s at Google Project Zero team have recently disclosed information about their discovery of a bug that is able to intercept private chats and media shared between WhatsApp users. Right now, the team has only spoken about threats to iOS users of the private messaging app.

Writing about it in a blog post, researcher Ian beer said that “a few websites have the potential to hack the devices and users should strictly avoid visiting any unauthorised website. It is not only the texts that the hackers can get access to, but they can also get access to media files and locations via these chats.”

By logging on to unauthorized websites, iOS users can expose themselves to hackers who can bypass the end-to-end encryption on services like Gmail, Hangouts, WhatsApp and even Telegram. As many as 5 different iPhone exploits have been unearthed by Google’s Threat Analysis Group (TAG).

Responding to the report, a WhatsApp spokesperson told the Financial Express that, “WhatsApp cares deeply about the privacy of our users. It is false to claim there is a known bug within WhatsApp impacting users at this time. As always, we recommend users follow warnings from manufacturers on the latest security updates for mobile phone operating systems.”
