How do the brakes on an airplane work

An airplane applies a total of three brakes when it touches down on the runway.

Airplanes travel at great speeds. When in the air, they fly using high-powered thrust engines. However, while landing, an airplane has to reduce the speed at a higher rate. But simply pressing the brakes on the wheels will not solve the purpose as the immense stress on the wheel mechanism will simply pull the wheels apart at such high speeds. In order to efficiently apply brakes and drastically reduce the speed of the aircraft, the pilot applies three types of brakes—landing gear brake (wheels), speed brakes (on the wings) and the thrust reverser (in the turbines). Check out the videos below which demonstrates how an airplane brakes work.
