Samsung and LG battle for Apple's OLED display
Samsung, LG and Sharp are the leaders for being one of the largest display suppliers in the smartphone industry, but a large percentage of their production is focusing on panels for iPhones. Apple is the most vital customer for these display suppliers, which means there is a lot of rivalry between them.
In fact, it appears that Samsung and LG are now fully engaged in a war to obtain from Apple as many OLED orders as possible. Sharp, the underdog in this battle, has already suggested that Apple has made plans to switch to OLED panels for the next-generation phone.
LG Display also has made a huge investment in flexible OLED panels throughout the year, increasing its facility and retooling half of it specifically for production of this type of display. LG has put in a considerable amount of money in its facilities to ramp up its production of flexible OLED panels with investment reaching up to $1.75 billion.
Even Samsung Display has reportedly invested over $5.15 billion in facilities from the beginning of this year to Q3, and the additional investment will increase Samsung’s total investment in OLEDs of this year to approximately $9.7 billion.
So, this means Samsung and LG have invested about $11.45 billion for flexible OLED panels — shows how these companies treasure Apple as a customer.
