Apple acquires French AI' startup Regaind

Regaind's AI algorithms can read and understand contents of a photo, analysing both technical and aesthetic values.

With the iPhone X, Apple has brought a new lease of life to flagship smartphones. Apart from the bezel-less display and the FaceID, the incorporation of AR without the need of dedicated hardware is a major step forward for the mobile technology. It seems that Apple is serious about the future of AR on their mobile devices as they have recently acquired Regaind, a French startup known for its work in the field of Artificial Intelligence if we are to believe TechCrunch’s report.

Apple is believed to have acquired Regaind in order to improve AI’s applications in its services. Regaind’s API has the capability to read the contents of a photograph and identify what’s what. So, if you search for an umbrella in the photos, you will be shown all photos that feature an umbrella in it.

You may think that that this feature is already available in the existing photos app on both Android and iOS. However, Regaind claims that their API can analyse both technical and aesthetic aspects of a subject in a photo. This means photos can be arranged according to the shape, size, colour and more. The API can also detect age, gender and emotion from the photos.

We don’t have any concrete knowledge about Apple’s intention with this takeover but we can expect the Cupertino giant to implement the learning of the company into its services and products.
