Samsung launches stamp-sized SSD with 512GB of storage

The SSD chip is 20mm x 16mm x 1.5mm in dimension and weighs just 1g

Samsung has launched a new BGA NVMe SSD, named PM971-NVMe, aimed to use it in next-generation PCs and ultra-slim notebook PCs.

The new BGA NVMe SSD, named PM971-NVMe, features a compact package that sports SSD components including NAND flash memory and a DRAM controller, while delivering superior performance. It enables sequential read/write speeds of up to 1,500MB/s and 900MB/s respectively.

The SSD chip is 20mm x 16mm x 1.5mm in dimension and weighs just 1g. Its volume is about a hundredth of a 2.5-inch SSD or a conventional HDD, and its surface area is a fifth of an M.2 SSD, allowing design flexibility for various computing device manufacturers.

The PM971-NVMe SSD line-up will be available in 512GB, 256GB and 128GB storage options.

Samsung has announced that the company will start providing the SSD chip to its customers starting June 2016.
