Kolkata girl makes it to Forbes Under 30 list for underwater drone

The underwater drone will provide better opportunities to study ocean and sea floors in depth, she said.

Mumbai: A 28-year-old girl from Kolkata has succeeded in developing a resourceful underwater drone for exploring the depths of oceans and seas. She has also been featured amongst Forbes’s top 30 most powerful young talents of the world for the same.

According to several reports, Sampriti Bhattacharya, 28, decided to build an underwater drone as there exists no easy way to study the ocean and sea floors in depth, apart from very expensive equipments.

The under-water drone was created as part of her research thesis at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she is a PhD scholar. Currently, She is also the founder of Hydroswarm—a start-up that designs small, autonomous drones for gathering underwater intelligence. Seven years earlier, she left the city to pursue aerospace engineering from Ohio State University.

Bhattacharya completed her schooling from South Point and is an alumnus of St. Thomas College in Kolkata. She pointed out all the predicaments surrounding deep water monitoring, which has hampered advanced underwater researches for such a long time.

She also said that her invention will help map the depths of underwater landscapes and also help researchers and scientist to locate the smallest living or non-living objects.

She believes that her invention will also help monitor and curb underwater pollution, which has been increasing rapidly over the years.
