Google Maps To Rename Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America

Tech giant Google on Monday announced that Google Maps will change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America when the US Geographic Names Information System is updated.

This change will be visible in the United States, whereas it will remain “Gulf of Mexico” in Mexico. Users from other countries, apart from the US and Mexico, will see both names on Google Maps. It will also change the name of the Alaskan peak Denali to Mount McKinley.

After taking office on January 20, US President Donald Trump ordered the name changes as part of a flurry of executive actions.

On Friday, the Trump administration’s Interior Department said that it had officially changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and also the Alaskan peak Denali to Mount McKinley.

"As directed by the President, the Gulf of Mexico will now officially be known as the Gulf of America, and North America's highest peak will once again bear the name Mount McKinley," the Interior Department said in a statement.
