Bezel-less display, FaceID to debut on next-gen iPad Pro: Rumours

Rumours suggest a smaller iPad Pro with a bigger display accompanied by FaceID verification.

While rumours about the next generation iPhones are doing rounds of the Internet, there are some eagerly waiting for information on the next generation iPad Pro models — Apple’s flagship tablet range. Rumours have previously pointed out at a device with slimmer bezels and the possible inclusion of the FaceID from the iPhone X. Now though, the latest report by Japan’s Macotakara sheds some light in this regards.

First noted by 9to5Mac, the report gives us some idea about the possible dimensions of the iPad Pro models. The 10.5-inch model is said to measure 247.5mm (H) x 178.7mm (W) x 6mm (T), which is more compact when compared to the current iPad Pro’s 250.6mm x 174.1mm x 6.1mm. Meanwhile, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is said to measure 280mm (H) x 215mm (W) x 6.4mm (T), which is handier than the current-generation model at 305.7 x 220.6 x 6.9 mm.

The new iPad Pro models will see a massive reduction of bezels to achieve the same screen dimensions while losing the additional fat. The new models will resemble the yet-to-be-unveiled iPhones with slimmer bezels. Additionally, similar to the new iPhone, Apple will also get rid of the TouchID fingerprint sensor and adopt the FaceID 3D facial recognition system. Since the iPad Pro is expected to have balanced bezels all-around, we can expect Apple to squeeze in FaceID sensors on the narrow forehead, thereby avoiding the notch on top of the display. However, the FaceID system will only be able to scan faces in the vertical mode — no support for landscape face detection.

The report even goes on to mention that Apple will drop the 3.5mm headphone jack from the iPad Pro, following suite of the trend from its iPhone lineup. The Lightning Smart Connector for the Apple Keyboard is also expected to be relocated to the same side as the Lightning Port, which could end up making the iPad dock in a vertical position while typing.

Do note that these are rumours from an unreliable source, which means chances of the iPad Pro resembling anything like the concept device from the report could be zero. Apple is expected to unveil a new range of iPhones at an event in September, followed by the launch of new iPad Pro models sometime early next year.
