Apple acquires AR headset company Vrvana for $30 million

Apple has recently acquired mixed reality specialist Vrvana, maker of the Totem and the deal was sealed for around $30 million.

Rumours of Apple working on an augmented reality headset are already doing rounds and now a new report has added a little more fuel to it. According to TechCrunch, Apple has recently acquired mixed reality specialist Vrvana, a start-up that crowdfunded a unique camera-based AR and VR headset — the Totem. The report also suggests that the deal was sealed for around $30 million.

Earlier reports suggested that Apple is preparing to release its own AR headset in 2020. It is believed that augmented reality is a major focus and the next big thing from Apple.

Sources also revealed that dozens of Vrvana employees, including CEO Bertrand, have been working at Apple's AR division for weeks.

Vrvana is known as the creator of the still-in-development Totem headset. Talking about mixed reality, the Vrvana Totem is said to be able to overlay full, coloured digital images over the real world. However, if the Vrvana Totem lives up to Apple's expectation, it could give it a major boost in augmented reality.
