Band in aid!

In a bid to promote safety among women; a Raksha Band is an idea that will transpire into reality if the recent proposal gets approved.

There is a list of things that is being done to safeguard women. One more thing that might be added to this list is the ‘Raksha Band’, which will become a reality if the proposal gets approved. This wearable technology will enable women in distress to send a distress call to near and dear ones as well as a central monitoring agency – by just moving the arm in a particular way. If this proposal gets approved, then this band will be able to secure women at just '300 per band! We get city folk to comment...

A much needed move: Physio therapist Fathima N.J says, “I feel that this initiative should come into force as soon as possible as we live in a country where one has to think twice before stepping out. This band will really help women if it is monitored at the organisational level and respond to distress calls at the earliest. Actions speak louder than words and if this band provides the required safety a woman needs, then this Raksha band is indeed a step closer to women's safety.”

Arefa Kutubuddin Biziliwala who is physiotherapist feels that it is nice that technology also has the ability to protect women. She further adds, “This initiative will be a really big step towards security of women and their interests considering the crime and abuse rate. Alert with just a gesture is really great feature as it so simple but this also needs to be available to all section of society especially in villages and small towns. This initiative is definitely a welcome move as something is better than nothing.”

Thumbs up, already: This youngster feels that this initiative will be feasible in the long run. Bharath Ruia who works in a city based firm says, “This is a tactical solution but in terms of feasibility, this is not very feasible. We all want to ensure that women are safe but for that police force and lighting need to be better. BBMP need to invest on lighting up area as majority of crimes happen in dark areas. There is also a chance of data being misused in the central monitoring agency. On how helpful it is in safeguarding depends on the response time as its not only about alerting people but also how quick the response is.”

City based sociologist Neeti Singh says, “I welcome this move by the BBMP. But, I doubt if this can have any role in creating a safe and fair space for women in our cities. The problem of women safety is much more deep rooted in our society and it requires root level changes that can come by educating young boys and girls.”
