Hyderabad: CSIR-CRRI (Central Road Research Institute), in collaboration with Intel, INAI and IIIT-Hyderabad has launched the pilot project of its AI-driven solution to reduce road crashes in Nagpur. The solution will be launched in other cities in a phased manner.

The project called iRASTE (intelligent Solutions for Road Safety through Technology and Engineering) uses the power of AI (Artificial Intelligence) to halve road accidents in Nagpur. It was launched by Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari in Nagpur on Sunday.

For Project iRASTE, Intel India contributed onboard systems based on ADAS technology, CSIR-CRRI provided its domain expertise in road engineering, IIIT-Hyderabad conducted AI-based research to address population-scale road safety through the INAI centre for applied AI research.

Under this project, public transport vehicles in Nagpur will be equipped with collision avoidance technology. Sensors in these technologies will also help the device to map the dynamic risk of the entire road network (grey spot map) and alert the driver to take required remedial action.
