Qualcomm's new chip to make Android Wear watches smarter

The Wear 2100 is 30 per cent smaller than the Snapdragon 400 chip and also utilises 25 per cent lesser power.

Mumbai: American tech giant Qualcomm has constantly introduced improved mobile chips and processors for better computation abilities on smartphones. Now the company is looking forward to make inroads into the wearable segment by introducing a totally new platform.

According to the Verge, most modern day smartwatches are powered by the Snapdragon 400 SOC, which was originally manufactured for smartphones and tablets. However, the company now wants to change the Snapdragon 400 chipset with the latest Snapdragon Wear 2100.

The report also pointed out that the Wear 2100 is 30 per cent smaller than the 400 and also utilises 25 per cent lesser power, ensuring a better battery life. The new chip will also include LTE modem, WiFi, and Bluetooth for enhanced connectivity.

Additionally, the Wear 2100’s smaller size will ensure that future Android Wears will be much slimmer in comparison to the ones available in the market currently. In future, this new chip will be utilised by a slew of smart wearables including trackers, sports watches, headsets, smart eyewear, and other wearable tech.

Reports indicate that the first Snapdragon 2100 equipped products are already in development and it is expected that the next wave of ultra-modern smartwatches will utilise these smart chipsets.
