Canon pushes for compact form factor with EOS Rebel SL3

This DSLR is the first from the brand with Dual Pixel eye-tracking autofocus.

Mirrorless cameras are the brand’s primary focus as it allows for a lesser form factor that’s more portable in comparison to traditional DSLR cameras. However, Canon, one of the leaders in photography equipment has recently updated its EOS line-up by announcing the Rebel SL3 which boasts a 24.1MP APS-C sensor and it also happens to be the smallest and lightest model ever in their EOS range. Weighing 449g, the new DSLR comes with a DIGIC 8 processor, a 3-inch flip touchscreen that can be used for vlogging and selfies. It also is capable of 4K video recording and the highlighted feature of the SL3 is it's Dual Pixel AF with eye-tracking in live view shooting mode.

On the Rebel SL3, Canon offers a 9-point autofocus and spot focus for accurate subject selection. Alongside this, it comes with a Dual Pixel feature that’s embedded on the sensor itself that provides quick and accurate autofocus for 1080p video and live video recording. Being, a budget device, Canon has done well to add an eye-tracking feature on a camera at this price point.

As mentioned earlier, this is Canon’s first Rebel DSLR to feature 4K video shooting. However, it's limited to Contrast Detect AF and the Dual Pixel AF doesn’t work with 4K recording. Canon states that the sensor is cropped 1.6 times giving you an effective sensor size that’s smaller than a Micro Four Thirds sensor.

The Canon EOS Rebel SL3 comes with a smooth skin mode and a background blur mode that is heavily featured on smartphone cameras nowadays. It is pretty amazing that Canon has managed to do this even without a fast lens. Apart from this, the DSLR can also shoot at 5 fps and the ISO range is topped out at 25,600 (51,200 expanded). The buddle battery can provide a massive 1,500 shots or 350 images with live view.

The Canon EOS Rebel SL3 will launch at the end of this month for USD 600 (about Rs 41,500) or USD 750 (Rs 51,900) with an EF-S 18-55mm lens.
