Fifth Google Pixel 6a Phone Catches Fire In 12 Months

In a post on Reddit, a user said they woke up to a horrible smell and a loud noise, only to discover that their device was on fire while charging on the nightstand next to them

A user has reported that their Pixel 6a smartphone caught fire after installing Google’s battery performance update, which was intended to prevent overheating issues.

In a post on Reddit, the user said they woke up to a horrible smell and a loud noise, only to discover that their device was on fire while charging on the nightstand next to them.

The Redditor, u/footymanageraddict, mentioned they had used a 45W Steam Deck charger to charge the Pixel 6a. They also shared photos of the burned phone, showing a melted screen and casing.

Following reports of Pixel 6a devices catching fire, Google released a mandatory update and began offering free battery replacements for affected devices. However, this user noted they are not located “in the area of supported walk-in repair shop replacements.”

According to a report by Android Authority, this is the fifth Pixel 6a reported to have caught fire in the past 12 months. Notably, the previous four incidents occurred before Google’s battery performance update.

This incident comes after Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) issued a warning on July 25, stating that the Pixel 6a’s battery may overheat. The ACCC added that users do not need to return their devices.
