Chinese tech giant Baidu is set to launch the next generation of its artificial intelligence model in the second half of 2025, according to a report by CNBC.
The new model, Ernie 5, called a foundation model, is set to have “big enhancements in multimodal capabilities.” The multimodal AI can process and convert texts, videos, images, and audios, reported CNBC citing a source.
This comes amid intense competition among Chinese companies in the AI sector, including from DeepSeek, which was released in the US in January, throwing financial markets into a spin, reportedly due to its popularity and its low price compared to other AI companies.
The Chinese startup claimed that its AI models are on par with other leading models, including ChatGPT. Baidu said that that its latest model, Ernie 4, is on par with ChatGPT-4.
The tech giant was the first major Chinese tech company to release a ChatGPT-like chatbot called Ernie in 2023, but it has faced challenges in achieving widespread adoption for its Ernie large language model due to competitors, including ByteDance’s Doubao chatbot and DeepSeek.
However, Baidu has yet to officially announce its plans to release the next-generation AI model.
