Vijay Sethupathi Is Done With Darkness
The actor is keeping his eye out for a role that’s fun without being vulgar

Vijay Sethupathi has had enough of playing dark, serious, intense characters. “For some reason, I am mostly offered such roles. Is it written on my face that I am a serious person?” he demands. “Even in my next release – Slum Dog: 33 Temple Road – I have a very dark, intense part,” he says.
Not that Vijay doesn’t like playing such roles. “It is a challenge to be able to enter the dark world of these characters. Each one has a different kind of darkness. My character in Maharaja was tortured and traumatised in a way different to the character in Slum Dog : 33 Temple Road,” he says.
However, this constant dipping into the dark zone has taken a toll on Vijay’s mind. “I need to do a light-hearted role to free my mind of all the dark characters,” he shares. Sadly, filmmakers think Vijay is too accomplished for fun roles.
“It is a myth that serious roles are easier to do than light ones. In fact, comedy is the most difficult genre for any actor. Though everyone on the set may be laughing while the actor performs a comedy scene, the audience may not find it funny at all.”
Vijay wants an original, refined comedy with no slapstick or vulgarity.
