Understanding Sexual Health Challenges

Age, health, and emotions shape men’s sexual lives differently

Q I am 60 years old and have been suffering from diabetes for over 20 years. For the past three years, I have had the problem of erectile dysfunction. I still get sexually aroused. In my 30s, I used to have sex three times a day. I want to be able to have a healthy erection. What can I do to achieve this?

As a person ages, the pace of the sexual response slows down. This is a universal experience that everyone must go through. You cannot expect to be as agile as you were at age 30. Diabetes, per se, cannot cause Erectile Dysfunction. It is a complication (Endothelial Dysfunction resulting from inadequately managed diabetes) that is responsible. If this is the reason, your problem can be treated with medication in the Phosphodiesterase (PDEs) Type 5 Inhibitors category. However, we must check whether there are other causes for your problem, and manage any that are identified. At times, other factors in combination with diabetes may be responsible for the situation. In such cases, a comprehensive management strategy has to be adopted. Consult a Sexologist in person.

Q I am a 30-year-old man and feel uncomfortable in the company of women. The slightest contact results in the erection of my penis. Sometimes, even walking with a female results in this.

This is a normal response. Your body is primed for sex at your age. At a sexual stimulation like physical contact or the proximity to a woman, your sexual system responds by producing a penile erection. While I understand your embarrassment, there is no need to worry. Consider a woman as an individual/person rather than a sexual being, then the incidence of erections may reduce. The best thing would be to get married so that the novelty of a female disappears.
