Tragedy on Sanjay Bhansali’s Set

Carpenter’s electrocution revives discussion on workplace safety and crew wellbeing

A 42-year-old man lost his life in a tragic accident on the set of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Love & War in the early hours of June 17.

Chandradhari Yadav, a carpenter, passed away after suffering an electric shock, suspected to be caused by a short circuit. The incident took place around 3:00 a.m. at the Royal Pump Studio in Goregaon East, Mumbai, just ahead of a scheduled rehearsal shoot featuring lead actress Alia Bhatt.

Yadav is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Following appeals from the Film Studio Setting and Allied Mazdoor Union and Federation of Western India Cine Employees, Bhansali Productions offered Rs 40 lakhs as compensation to the bereaved family. The workers’ organisations are, however, pushing for the production house to also cover the education costs of Yadav’s daughters.

The mishap has once again brought on-set safety protocols, regulated working hours, and the well-being of crew members in Bollywood under scrutiny. Union leaders are actively demanding stricter guidelines to prevent safety lapses on film sets in the future.
