The Little Boy Who Sang Before He Roared
Virat Kohli’s school music teacher fondly recalls his early enthusiasm for singing

Long before Virat Kohli became a cricketing icon, known for his relentless intensity on the field, he was just a bright-eyed boy with a love for melodies. Music played an unexpectedly profound role in his early years, offering him an outlet beyond the cricket pitch.
This was revealed by Dr. Sadhna Sohal, who taught him music at school.
Dr Sadhna recounted a charming memory that still lingers in her heart. “A sweet, adorable little boy with chubby cheeks. Virat was brought to me by his elder sister, Bhawna, saying, ‘Ma’am, isske song suno.’ Virat started singing seriously and passionately, ‘Ye kali kali aankhein, ye gore gore gaal, ye teekhi-teekhi nazrein…’ I smiled and pulled his cheeks with love,” she shared.
While most remember Virat for his aggressive batting style and unmatched determination, his early musical inclination reveals a softer, more introspective side. His teacher believes that his love for music wasn’t just a fleeting childhood interest, it was an expression of his emotions, a creative escape that allowed him to balance his fiery ambition with moments of reflection.
“Though it has been a long time since we met, I wish he would visit Vishal Bharti Public School, refresh his childhood memories, and meet me before I leave the school,” Dr Sadhna said wistfully.
Now, as Virat Kohli steps away from Test cricket, he will hopefully have more time to revisit the cherished corridors of his childhood, reconnect with his roots, and perhaps, hum a tune from his early days — one that his teacher still remembers.
