Sridevi’s Family in Land Dispute

Court orders status quo on the 2.7-acre Chennai property; seeks mediation

The long-running legal battle over late actor Sridevi’s prime property on Chennai’s East Coast Road has now reached the Supreme Court, with the apex court directing that status quo be maintained on the disputed land.

On September 16, the SC issued notices to Sridevi’s husband, Boney Kapoor, and their daughters, Janhvi and Khushi Kapoor, and directed the parties to explore an amicable settlement through court-monitored mediation.

At the centre of the dispute is a 2.7-acre plot in Sholinganallur along Chennai’s ECR, part of a 4.7-acre estate with a farmhouse. The property has reportedly been valued at Rs 500 crore. Sridevi, her mother and sister bought the land in April 1988 from businessman M.C. Sambanda Mudaliar’s family. After her death, Boney and their daughters applied in 2023 to transfer the property records into their names.

The move was challenged by siblings M.C. Sivakami and M.C. Natarajan, who claim to be the legal heirs of the original owner. They have alleged that the 1988 sale deeds were fraudulent and executed when they were minors.

The Madras High Court dismissed their suit, ruling that the decades-old transaction could no longer be challenged under the law of limitation. The siblings then moved the Supreme Court. The SC has now cautioned against dismissing the suit at the preliminary stage. It directed the parties to maintain status quo on the property and referred the dispute to mediation under a retired High Court judge. The matter will next come up before the Supreme Court on December 18, 2026.
