Sam’s ChatGPT Ad Sparks Backlash

The apparent irony, Sam fighting AI exploitation while endorsing a leading AI platform, was not lost on netizens.

Samantha Ruth Prabhu is facing fresh online backlash over her ChatGPT endorsement while simultaneously pursuing legal action against the misuse of AI. Critics have questioned the endorsement as debates continue over comprehensive AI regulation. The ad, in which Samantha says ChatGPT “gets me” in every language, went viral as she was simultaneously pursuing legal action over AI misuse.

Last week, the Bombay High Court granted her an interim injunction protecting her personality and publicity rights, including against unauthorised AI-generated deepfakes, morphed videos and chatbots using her likeness or voice. The apparent irony, Sam fighting AI exploitation while endorsing a leading AI platform, was not lost on netizens.

Shabana Azmi said, “Endorsements are a personal choice. But no matter how lucrative the offer, I would never endorse a harmful product or something that I wouldn’t personally use.”

Advertising guru Prahlad Kakkar said, “Anything endorsed by a public figure must be completely truthful, transparent and unambiguous.” He added, “The joint force of digital calling-out and legal liability is reshaping the commercial choices of prominent figures. Netizens are tracking historical endorsements, making it harder for stars to preserve their public image if they sell controversial products.”
